About Tony Smith
Tony Smith is a Welsh born photographer who specialises in photographing ethnic, cultural and religious festivals and environmental portraiture.
In recent years he has travelled widely in India and the Himalayan countries to capture the Hindu and Buddhist festivals that he enjoys so much; including two Kumbh Melas, the Durga Puja in West Bengal and the Maya Shivratri in Pashupatinath, Nepal and Buddhists in Sikkim and Bhutan.
Of particular interest in Europe are the Gypsy and Traveller festivals and Horse Fairs of France, Spain and England and the religious festivals of Spain, especially Andalucia where Tony lives for several months each year. Apart from "people events" he is particularly fond of the Islamic architecture of Andalucia and Portugal - and just about anything that makes a good photograph!
Tony's photographs have won awards at International Exhibitions and several have been published. He is an Associate Member of the Royal Photographic Society and holds the Diploma of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain having submitted successful panels to both organisations.
Of Tony, Tom Stoddard, Hon FRPS renowned Photo Journalist wrote:
"Tony Smith's photographs reflect his deep love of places and faces. He is a traveller, who is happiest surrounded by similar free spirits at carnivals, festivals and celebrations. His simple uncluttered pictures beautifully illustrate the joy of being alive, and free".
More recently, Tony has become interested (obsessed?) with iphone photography and is currently building his portfolio of images and developing a new website dedicated to this genre.
